Gilson and General Motors Are Redefining FulFillment & Distribution
  • Elimination of print through electronic distribution
  • A "dealer only" web site for faster access to materials
  • On-line editing of content by individual stakeholder
General Motors, the world's largest automaker, has been the industry's annual global sales leader since 1931. Founded in 1908, GM today employs about 284,000 people around the world. With global headquarters in Detroit, GM manufactures its cars and trucks in 33 countries.

MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY
Print In the U.S, GM sells its vehicles through a nationwide network of roughly 8,000 dealers. As part of the sales effort, GM supplies each dealer with an encyclopedic policies and procedures manual. Containing everything from detailed service training requirements to claims process instructions to warranty forms, this manual is so large it barely fits within the confines of a three-inch binder.

Gilson was charged with printing the individual manual pages, assembling them into binders, and shipping them to dealers. That's pretty sweet work (and sweeter money) for a printing and fulfillment house like us. But we knew it wasn't the best use of GM's fulfillment dollar. So we came up with an alternative - distributing the material on an interactive CD-ROM. This immediately cut GM's program costs by __%.
Mindwire But we weren't done boosting efficiency and driving down cost. We've now taken advantage of increased Internet delivery speeds and our own MindWire technology to construct a stand-alone web site dealers can use to access and print manual pages (in pdf format) as needed.

We've also developed a workflow that enables GM "Subject Matter Experts" - 35 people around the country - to assemble, edit and finalize the manual online. In addition to streamlining the production process, this method allows more timely delivery of changes to dealers.
